This French cemetery was founded in 1941. A committee set up by citizens of Kapelle began, under the watchful eye of the occupying forces, to rebury the French soldiers. These were buried where they fell in 1940 in and around Kapelle. At the request of the French government at the end of the 1940s, the other graves of French war victims who fell in the Netherlands were concentrated on the war cemetery in Kapelle. The dedication took place on May 16, 1950. Many victims were later transferred to France through the care of the French burial service and reburied there in their hometown. Their names are written on the central monument in the field of honor. 229 French victims are buried on the plot.
